Honest writers steel-man the other side because it shows intelligent readers you can be trusted and are interested in getting to the truth. Running from unpleasant facts in the name of some grand strategy because you think readers are too stup*d to handle them is the ultimate example of elitist top-down thinking.
And perhaps if you do feel "We the People" are too stupid to reach a wise conclusion after weighing all the facts then maybe we should give less power to "the people" and more to the individual so as not to pull us all down to the lowest common denominator in every aspect of life.
