“What are your thoughts now that Trump is suggesting that he may not sign the COVID Relief Bill, and wants checks to be 2,000, instead of 600 dollars?”

My Thoughts:

President Trump is incompetent.

Why wasn’t he in the room when Pelosi, Schumer, and Mitch McConnell were negotiating the COVID bill?

I thought Trump was some great dealmaker?

President Reagan worked closely with Speaker Tip O’Neill. Great presidents take an ACTIVE role in proposing legislation. True leadership!

Trump is a reactionary president.

He’s not guided by vision or philosophy, but by his desire to be liked by his base.

Since his base has shown their disdain for the COVID bill, which his administration helped draft via Secretary Mnuchin’s involvement in the negotiations, Trump is now against it too.

(It’s well documented that Trump’s administrators realize how incompetent Trump is so they try to keep him as far away from the actual dealmaking as possible since Trump might give away the gingerbread house in the interest of getting a good headline.)

In other words, in an act of political courage, Trump says he’ll flush the toilet, but let’s not forget he’s the most responsible for what sits at the bottom.

I applaud Trump’s courage. The Coronibus bill is an absolute disgrace. Any politician who voted for it should be voted out of office for the simple fact that in the span of 6 hours they voted for a piece of legislation that they and their staff DID NOT READ even though it costs more than the whole Iraq War. Respect to my two favorite senators for voting against it: Rand Paul and Ted Cruz.

A business-owner or CEO dealing in millions or billions would hire an army of lawyers to go over a contract with a fine-tooth comb for months before signing such a deal whereas our Senators say, “F*ck it, we’ll do it live!” with trillions.

So yes, I applaud Trump’s courage, but I abhor his incompetence. He waited until AFTER the legislation had already passed both houses with broad bipartisan support to signal his disapproval. And now if he doesn’t sign it we risk a government shutdown on Monday.

And where is Trump now you might ask? Learning from his mistakes by sitting around a warm fire and a Christmas tree with Pelosi, Schumer, and Mitch McConnell trying to work out a deal? Nope.

Flying overhead delivering presents?

Ho! Ho! Ho! He’s in Mar-a-Lago.

Merry Christmas!

UPDATE: Not at all surprised that despite Trump’s huffing-and-puffing he signed the bill anyway. FoxNews reports that the standalone bill for $2000 also now has a smaller chance of passing in the Senate because of Trump’s caving, “The fact that Trump signed the stimulus into law may take pressure off Republicans in both the House and the Senate to vote for the boosted checks.”
