American values were/are heavily influenced by the U.K. but I would say we put a different emphasis on different values.

A nation is indeed a construct. It is no more “real” than anything else that floats around our heads, but as we can agree ideas have real-world consequences. The U.S. as a construct has done so much good for the world. The world’s standard of living continues to climb. This isn’t to say we shouldn’t keep evolving and aren’t facing real challenges, but there are certain things we shouldn’t run away from in the name of “progress”.
