A Single Thought to Discipline Your Mind and Seize the Day

I believe they’re are as real as physical objects, and in someways they’re more real because they can be more difficult to get rid of.

Therefore let’s imagine our mind as a room, thoughts as furniture, and well people as people.

And so as we might hear from beyond the stairs, “Anthony, clean your damn room!”, let me encourage you to clean your mental space…

What “furniture” is taking up the most space?

  • Do you like it?
  • Is it useful?

If the answer is yes, then clean it, and maybe move it to a more prominent spot so you can see it more often.

If the answer is no, then throw it out, and maybe if it’s a big piece of furniture ask for help, no shame in hiring help either.

You can also break it down into smaller pieces or if you really hate it — light it on fire!

Just don’t burn the whole house down.

After eliminating some of your old “furniture” and baggage, what new stuff can you add?

Google, books, YouTube, and Medium can help with your search.

When you see something you like — write it down, save it, or buy it. Embracing a few new pieces can radically change your whole room.

Be the gatekeeper of your “room”.

You shouldn’t just let anyone into your room because they can end up cluttering your space, leaving their junk, distracting you, and ultimately pooping on your floor, as I’m sure we’ve all had the misfortune of doing ourselves, right?

Better to politely say, “Sorry you can’t come in. There’s still poop on the floor from the last person I let into my room.”

Finally, invite your friends in.

Life is better when it’s shared so don’t banish everyone in the observable universe. No one is perfect.

It would be wise though to set a few ground rules and boundaries, “Don’t touch that! It’s my Grandma.”

In addition to living people, you can also invite the dead (I often surround myself with the greats of history) and the virtual (cough, cough, well hello there).

Then once our mental space is in order it’s easier to get our physical space in order too, i.g. clean mind = clean room. The two are often a reflection of each other because… things are thoughts and thoughts are things.
